FAM DISAPPOINTS MALAYSIAN FOOTBALL FANS
FIFA’s recent revelation regarding the falsification of information involving seven Malaysian heritage players is not only shameful but also shakes the very foundation of integrity in national sports. This can no longer be dismissed as a mere “technical error,” as previously claimed by the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM). The evidence points clearly to manipulation and forgery of official documents during the verification process for heritage players representing Malaysia.
FIFA has imposed severe sanctions, a fine of CHF 350,000 (approximately RM1.8 million) on FAM, a 12-month suspension for each player, and additional individual fines. FIFA’s investigation uncovered clear discrepancies between the original documents and those submitted by Malaysian officials, including inaccurate information about the birthplace of the players’ grandparents. This indicates that the registration process for heritage players was conducted without proper verification and transparency.
What is even more alarming is that this case also involves several government agencies responsible for verifying citizenship documents. The Minister of Home Affairs previously stated that the citizenship process for the seven players had been carried out “properly and in accordance with the law.” However, FIFA’s findings clearly contradict that claim. This is no longer a technical issue, this is outright deception that tarnishes the nation’s dignity.
As a result, the seven heritage players not only face a one-year suspension but have also lost their livelihoods. They are victims of negligence and mismanagement by those who were supposed to protect their careers. The question now is, who will take responsibility? FAM cannot remain silent. The association must step forward with a comprehensive and honest explanation, supported by evidence of how such misconduct could have taken place.
Public outrage toward FAM has reached its peak. From schoolchildren to senior citizens, Malaysians everywhere are expressing anger and disappointment. On social media and in countless WhatsApp groups, this has become a hot topic, the people feel deceived after years of placing their trust in FAM to elevate Malaysian football.
Although many fans initially welcomed the inclusion of naturalised and heritage players with open hearts, believing it would help advance Malaysian football internationally, they now feel disillusioned and ashamed. The hard work and sacrifices of supporters, coaches, and players have been overshadowed by the negligence and dishonesty of a few irresponsible individuals.
FAM must assume both moral and institutional responsibility for this failure. It is time for an independent internal audit to identify the true cause and those involved in the falsification of documents. If criminal elements are found, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and relevant authorities must take appropriate legal action.
This is not merely a football issue, it is a matter of national pride. The people demand transparency, accountability, and reform in the management of sports governance. FAM must have the courage to answer, not hide behind procedural excuses.
The Malaysian public waits with sorrow and disappointment. We cannot allow the integrity of our football and the honour of our nation to be trampled upon any longer.
